When considering intensive mental health treatment, two common options are Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP). Understanding the differences can help you choose the right level of care.

Time Commitment

PHP typically requires 20 to 30 hours per week across 5 to 6 days. IOP requires 9 to 12 hours per week across 3 days. This difference makes IOP significantly more compatible with work and family obligations.

Level of Care

PHP is considered a higher level of care than IOP. It is often used as a step-down from inpatient or residential treatment, or as an alternative when someone needs significant support but does not require 24-hour care.

When to Choose PHP

PHP may be appropriate if you need daily clinical support, are stepping down from residential treatment, your symptoms significantly interfere with daily functioning, or you need medication monitoring or adjustment.

When to Choose IOP

IOP may be the right fit if you can maintain basic daily functioning, have work or family obligations to balance, need more than weekly therapy but less than daily treatment, or are stepping down from PHP. Virtual IOP adds the additional benefit of attending from home, which removes transportation barriers and allows you to practice skills in your real-life environment.
